On October 5th 1974, at the Horse and Groom pub in Guildford, a bomb planted by the IRA detonated. The explosion claimed the lives of one civilian, two off-duty Scots guards and two off-duty WRAC servicewomen, wounding scores more.
The loss of Private Ann Hamilton and Private Caroline Slater was felt throughout the Corps then, and over five decades later, continues to impact our veterans.
To mark the 50th anniversary of the atrocity, the WRAC Association organised and installed a new plaque within Quakers Acre and held a service of dedication alongside the Scots Guards, families of those who were killed, and dignitaries from the Borough of Guildford including then Mayor, Cllr Maj Sallie Barker MBE.
Today the plaque stands as a testament to their sacrifice, and within this quiet garden our members visit to reflect and remember.
